Medical examinations for admission to driving should be conducted more often than once every 5 years, and not only for professional drivers, but also for all drivers, says Roman Derkach, chief physician of the Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, during a round table on the occasion of the beginning of the II stage of the All-Ukrainian Road Safety Week.

"Due to the full-scale war, Ukrainians are under enormous psychological pressure. People do not sleep at night, during the day they constantly monitor the news to see if there is any anxiety. All this greatly increases the load on the central nervous system, on which the work of the entire body depends. Because of this, chronic diseases progress. "Without regular medical examinations of drivers, we do not understand what condition they are in. Therefore, the proposal is to conduct examinations of all drivers, not just professional ones, more often than once every 5 years during martial law," said Roman Derkach.

The doctor also emphasized the need to develop clear algorithms for allowing people to drive after surgical interventions.

"Currently, there are no clear criteria for when you can get behind the wheel after an appendectomy, endoprosthetics, or head surgery. I have personally seen patients leave my medical facility after arm or leg surgery and get behind the wheel. Today, we have the Unified State Register of Medical Devices, a single access to all manipulations performed on the population of Ukraine. And this is the second issue that also requires discussion and determination - whether the patient has the right to drive after the operations," Roman Derkach emphasized.
